Sleep Apnea Sufferers: Try Non-Invasive Methods First

Sleep apnea is a condition characterized by significant interruption in breaths during the sleep cycle. Usually, the condition is diagnosed during a sleep study after patients report constant daytime drowsiness, lack of concentration, and a feeling of never resting, even after receiving full night's sleep. An apneic event, or lapse in breathing, can last for ten seconds or more and cause blood oxygen to drop to dangerous levels. Although there are several forms of treatment, they can often be invasive, expensive, or difficult. Most instances of sleep apnea occur due to a slight obstruction of the airways when people sleep on their backs. In other words, snoring. In addition to the use of the Sleep Apnea Pillow, some patients also make use of creative means to keep themselves from moving onto their back during the night. Most notably, placing a tennis ball into a sock or stocking and pinning the sock to the shirt helps. Other patients have had success using a positional alarm which is designed to sound off when the user has settled into a supine position. These means are used so eventually, the person suffering with sleep apnea will train their body to become accustomed to sleeping comfortably in positions that do not disrupt sleep and cause the apnetic episodes.

After using the Sleep Apnea Pillow, it is a good idea for overweight sleep apnea sufferers to lose weight. Significant additional weight causes enlargement of the tongue and neck which worsens sleep apnea. In addition, alcoholic beverages and muscle relaxants make sleep apnea more pronounced. Abstaining is recommended for any sufferers.

Getting a proper night's sleep is essential for good health and well being. A diagnosis of sleep apnea should not be taken lightly. Remember to go to non-invavsive treatments before the more drastic medical means.
